If you have a love affair with everything bagels but need to be gluten-free or wheat-free, this is the recipe for you. Many gluten-free everything bagel recipes rely on gluten-free flours for a more traditional recipe. My everything bagel is made with almond flour, eggs and dairy-free cheeses, making it totally grain-free! This little recipe experiment turned out to be EVERYTHING I wanted!
The expirement:
I had not tried this recipe before making a video about it. That’s right, I made these grain-free everything bagels for the first time on camera. It could have ended up on the blooper reel, but instead it turned out fantastic!
As with most of my favorite recipes, their aren’t a ton of ingredients. I start with dairy-free shredded cheese from Parmela’s Creamery and Kite Hill cream cheese melted together. Scroll down for some more info on these products that I use all the time. I grabbed flax seed meal from my grocery store bulk bin, as it is often fresher from bulk bins and I can get as much as I need. I used my go-to almond flour from Costco, but you can use any almond flour you love. I linked one from Amazon below.
My favorite products for this recipe:
-
Now Foods Almond Flour: If you haven’t gotten yourself some almond flour, it’s a great gluten-free pantry staple. Right now this non-gmo brand has a 40% coupon!
- Trader Joe’s Everything But the Bagel Seasoning Blend: The perfect seed and spice combo for an everything bagel. It contains sesame seeds, sea salt flakes, dried minced garlic, dried minced onion, black sesame seeds, poppy seeds. Pick it up at a local Trader Joe’s in-store for about $2. If you don’t have Trader Joe’s nearby, you can get it on Amazon for a bit more here.
- Kite Hill Cream Cheese Alternative Spread: it’s velvety smooth, with a rich, subtly tangy and sweet flavor. It’s almond based, and I usually keep some on hand in the fridge. It comes in lots of flavors; for this recipe I loaded on the Chive flavor which went perfectly with the everything bagel seasoning. You can find it at Target, Sprouts, Whole Foods and more. Here’s the store locator on their website: https://www.kite-hill.com/where-to-buy/
- Parmela Creamery Mozzarella Style Nut Cheese: This dairy-free mozzarella cheese substitute is shredded for easy topping and even melts like real cheese. Instead of being soy-based like so many others, it’s cultured from cashew milk. You can’t order this product online, but you can find it in many stores around the country like Publix, Whole Foods, Sprouts, Wegmans and more. Check out all their incredible products on their website: https://www.parmelacreamery.com/products
(Disclosure: I may receive a very small amount of revenue if you purchase through my Amazon links. It does NOT raise the cost for you, but does help me keep on creating recipes and videos on Jana Eats. Thanks!)
Try these out and see if my grain-free everything bagel recipe becomes your go-to homemade bagel. Remember, onion and garlic keep you sexy- great excuse to load on these ingredients!
Recipe and how-to YouTube video from my channel below.
Grain-Free Everything Bagels
Ingredients
- 3 cups dairy-free shredded mozzarella
- ¼ cup Kite Hill almond cream cheese
- 1 1/2 cups almond flour
- 1/4 cup flaxseed meal
- 1 tbsp. baking powder
- 1 tsp. granulated garlic
- 2 large eggs
- pinch of sea salt
Topping Ingredients:
- 1 egg, beaten
- Trader Joe’s Everything Bagel Spice Mix
Method
- Pre-heat oven to 400F. Line baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Heat mozzarella and cream cheese for 1 minute, checking and mixing every 20 seconds. Stir until combined.
- In a large bowl, add cheese mixture and all the other ingredients. Mix well. I use a combination of a mixing spoon and my hands to make sure everything is well incorporated and doughy.
- Have a small bowl of water handy. Divide the dough into 5 balls.
- Place on parchment and with wet hands, flatten and create a hole in the center, shaping dough into a bagel shape.
- Beat 1 egg for egg wash. Brush egg over the top of the bagel. This will help the Everything Bagel Spice mixture to stick to the bagels. Top with enough spice mixture to cover the tops of the bagels.
- Bake for 18-20 minutes or until golden brown.
- Slice and top with dairy-free cream cheese or butter, avocado and pickled onions, make it into a sandwich!
